Icon8 mySQL vs. msSQL

Is it worthed to try out msSQL? My professor did not recommended me to use msSQL for some reason, he was saying that it's better to use POSTgreSQL or mySQL. Do you guys have any idea why msSQL is not as good as the others? Is this true? Should I try it out?

Since this is more embedded into VS and I'm dealing with ASP.NET which is also a Microsoft product, so that's why I start think to try it out...

Well, MySQL and PostgreSQL are both free for one thing. You could use MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, which I believe is also free, but I tried using it and couldn't even get it configured after installation. I prefer MySQL because I also like PHP, and they integrate so nicely together, not to mention the ease of installation and configuration of both (I use Apache HTTP Server, not IIS).

Yeah, many people do program PHP, and uses Apache, and mySQL because all of them are free. Why can't you configure it? I guess I should try it out myself too, but I just want to know why MsSQL is not recommended to those who've experienced with mySQL vs. MsSQL...?

I would go with mySQL as when you look at applying for jobs most that require databases always ask for mySQL, i guess its the industry standard or something, and i also personally prefer it as i have used it with PHP and VB/VB.NET, i would say learn what companys mainly want then learn the rest, would you not think thats best?

well, I think I always interested to learn something more and new and not regarding whatever the company said about them I just like to learn something new and compare what advantages and disadvantages between them! So, that's why I want to know why do people think msSQL is bad? I know that I think I should try it out myself and see it on my own eye and compares it, but I just want to hear some other people those are really more experienced than I do with these...

No, MsSQL is the best! It's the fastest and most scalable... but people choose not to use it because it's pricey (well... if your not using express version). As stated before, MySQL, PostGres are free, but if you are programming in an MS environment get/use MsSQL - it's too good to pass up. First of all its fully integrated into Visual Studio. Second of all it has held the test of time - billions of rows... 500 Gig Databases... all tested - not sure about MySQL but MsSQL has withstood it all
