I wouldn't say dorky, because some people want to make sure that they are takin every precaution against injury. cracked ribs don't feel too good at all. i personally don't use a chest protector or head gear. like i said, i understand why peope use it. to me and in my class we us foot and hand pads alodn with mouth pieces for protection and anything else is optional. we feel that if by any chance you get into a confrontation in the street, we're not going to be able to tell our attacker, "hold on one moment while i get my protective head gear and chest protector on." we kinda do it that way to get used to taking a hit, but we also watch our contact and not try to knock each other out in class.

so, is a chest protector dorky....no. it may just look that way. however, if you feel like you want to use it, go right ahead. because getting kicked or hit in the ribs or chest can knock the wind out of you. you're no less of a martial artist if you practice with one. just know you wouldn't be able to use it in the street if you have to defend yourself.
