SATA and IDE compatibility

Are motherboards capable of supporting a SATA hard-drive and an IDE hard-drive at the same time? I was assuming so, but I can not configure the two to work together, I have gone into the BIOS and allowed for dual hd's, no matter what I do the SATA drive will not show up. I know the IDE DVD roms can work with SATA. I made sure the SATA port was enabled and that there were no conflicts, however I noticed that on the SATA drive there was no way to set a jumper for a slave or master...call me stupid, but this is my first attemp at using the two types together and I have been building computers for 10 years!!! When I was working in IT at a local ski resort is when I was first introduced to the SATA. Could you also tell me the beni's of SATA, faster?
