Splash Screens

Does anyone know how to/have a tutorial to make a splash screen show at the beginning of your program, it has to be cross platform or linux though. I've only found ones for windows. (I'm on Ubuntu so slight problem there )

Why doesn't your C++ works on Linux as well...? can't you recompile and use it in Linux?

This one is interesting...

I thought splash screens you could code yourself? Meaning create a window with some details on and an image or two if needed, after a period of time or when the user presses something it then skips to the main part of your program?
