I pretty much stick with java and that includes sites such as Sun and javalobby. See links below.

There is also a large non-profit listing called opensource.org. You might be surprised how much free code is out there.

Whenever I'm looking specifically for a feature or function, I go with google code search. For something like that you might type ... java: pong game ... or Google also has listings of mail list of specific interests groups but I find just a regular google is me where I want to be faster.

Linux is the academic end of code, it seems. You can get a lot of ideas by looking through their projects. You might be surprised to see the basic game engine such as Quake is an ongoing open source project. Also, big games with lots of graphics use a variety of code libraries.
