Gamesmaker has a free download and is pretty basic.

Depending on your experience level the book Game Programming for Teens is a good starting source if you are serious and is found at most book stores. It comes with software demos to help get you familiar with that area of programming. Next goto amazon and type in 3D animation in the search and you'll find everything from anime 5 pro to Carrebella-(I butchered the spelling sorry). Game develpoement is overwhelming at first but once you struggle past the first few steps of game creation it's really simple yet time consuming.
Good luck!
