I think it's really a personal things. I program in both and quite enjoy both of them equally.

If you're going to do a lot of database interaction, I'd recommend php, because a) is more readily available and b) it generally comes with mySQL packaged - where as ASP generally needs to have MSSQL added on (a lot of Hosting companies charge more for Windows hosting as well).

But my advice, play around with both to see which you like.
