Internet Preparing to Go Into Outer Space Quote: Internet Preparing to Go Into Outer Space
Agence France Presse (10/17/07) Kwanwoo, Jun
Google chief Internet evangelist Vinton Cerf is working with engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California to create standards for space communications over an "interplanetary" Internet. Speaking at an annual Seoul forum, Cerf said the standard would apply to accessing information and controlling experiments in outer space. In a separate interview, Cerf said the vast distances and time delays involved in communicating far way from Earth were the reasons why a set of standards are needed. "Eventually we will accumulate an interplanetary backbone to assist robotic and manned missions with robust communication," said Cerf, adding that the project will be completed in three years. Cerf also said the growth of the Internet was remarkable, and added that the huge take-up beyond North America and Europe will likely lead to the creation of internationalized domain names (IDNs). "Sometime in the first half of 2008, I expect, there will be opportunities to register IDNs using different languages other than Latin," said Cerf. He also said he expects homes will eventually be saturated with Internet-enabled televisions, radios, kitchen appliances, fax machines and printers, and bathroom items.
