Well, MySQL and PostgreSQL are both free for one thing. You could use MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, which I believe is also free, but I tried using it and couldn't even get it configured after installation. I prefer MySQL because I also like PHP, and they integrate so nicely together, not to mention the ease of installation and configuration of both (I use Apache HTTP Server, not IIS).
